On a perfect May morning my sister, mom and I took a trip to the heart of the Texas Hill Country in Wimberley. Like many, we had heard of the hidden paradise that is Jacob’s Well.
Jacob’s Well is sometimes considered Texas’s most dangerous watering hole. But don’t let that scare you from this 120 ft. deep well that has formed in to a beautiful oasis. With the water being a constant 68F it is the perfect spot on one of Texas’s scorching days.
The watering hole is surrounded by cliffs and outcrops perfect for jumping from. But a word of caution to my adventurous readers out there: there are NO LIFEGUARDS. So remember to be safe and perhaps stick with the typical cannonball over your double flip.
Those with youngin’s or who find more fun in relaxing will be in for some fun as well. The crystal clear water is a joy to swim in and gets to be about 4ft deep around the well. Perfect for wading and floating through.
So now that you know all about Jacob’s Well how do you prepare?
Reserve A Spot: If you plan on swimming in the well you will need to reserve a spot through the Hay’s County website. These reservations are available from May 1st – September 30th. This reservation cost $9 for adults and $5 for children and Hays County residents. This reservation last for two hours. If you are looking to hike the trail and not hop in then no reservation is needed and there is no cost.
Pack: Pack anything you might need for a river day (minus the alcohol). That means river shoes, water, sunscreen, towel, extra pair of clothes. You will have about a 15 minute walk to the well and many spots can be rocky. The water as well has some slippery rocks and you might need to do some slight climbing to get to a jumping spot. Below, you will see the river shoes I love to wear and that have lasted me through many river trips and adventures.
Prepare: When you get there you’ll be greeted at a guard shack by a park ranger. The ranger will go over all the rules which includes, no fishing, no pets, no alcohol, and your two hour time limit. Before you hop on the trail make sure to use the bathrooms up in the parking lot. We didn’t see any other facilities available on the trail or down by the water.
With all this, your trip will be SO FUN!
